Pakistan’s disgruntled former captain Shahid Afridi said he wants to make an international comeback on Wednesday, but insisted that certain members of the national team management would first have to leave.Last week the talismanic all-rounder appeared to have ended an ugly public spat with the Pakistan Cricket Board which followed his sudden retirement from the international game after he was dumped as one-day captain.“I am not finished. I will come back in the team with respect but for that I will wait for the situation to improve and some people to be removed from the team management,” Afridi said before leaving for England.The all-rounder will play for Hampshire in England’s Twenty20 tournament after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reinstated his approval to play abroad – permission it had previously withdrawn.The 31-year-old denied money was his only motive for playing county cricket abroad.“To play for Pakistan has always been my priority,” said Afridi, who still holds the world record for the fastest one-day hundred – scored off just 37 balls against Sri Lanka in 1996.
“I get more money playing for Pakistan than in a county match, but money has never been my priority. I will come back but only if the situation improves.”
Earlier this month, the PCB suspended Afridi’s central contract and revoked permission from him to play abroad after he violated the terms of that contract by criticising the board and announcing his retirement.Afridi filed a petition against the sanctions but the matter was later settled out of the court. A PCB disciplinary committee fined Afridi $53,000 but his permission to play abroad was reinstated.The row began when Afridi developed differences with coach Waqar Younis over the team selection during Pakistan’s 3-2 win in the one-day series against the West Indies last month.He publicly criticised Waqar and was dismissed as one-day captain.Afridi refused to put a date on his return to the national team.

Thousands of Afridi’s fans greeted their World Cup captain as he arrived late Sunday at Karachi with some supporters even raising him on their shoulders.
Afridi is due to appear before a disciplinary committee Wednesday after the allrounder criticized top PCB officials, and said he would retire. The board responded by canceling his central contract and revoking the paperwork which enables him to play county cricket in England for Hampshire.Afridi said he would hold a news conference in Karachi on Monday afternoon and also reveal his future plans.Under the terms of a central contract, a Pakistan player is bound not to violate the PCB’s code of conduct, even after he announces his retirement. It is also mandatory for every player to get a No Objection Certificate from the board if he wishes to compete in any cricketing event abroad.The committee will hold its proceedings in camera and no outsider will be allowed to take part.“It appears that the PCB has already made up its mind and has come to the conclusion that Mr. Shahid Afridi is ‘guilty’,” Ali said in the letter, adding that “…the disciplinary proceeding is in fact a sham.”Ali also said the board had no legal right to suspend the central contract or revoke the No Objection Certificates and said it could be challenged “in a court of law.”Afridi’s lawyer was also unhappy with the proceedings behind held closed doors, arguing that the board “has no right to impose an embargo on the right of our client to legal representation.”The lawyer said that Afridi wanted to avoid any confrontation with the board and just wanted to answer the case against him.Afridi’s relations with the PCB became strained soon after he returned home following Pakistan’s 3-2 victory over the West Indies in an ODI series during April and May.Afridi accused team management of interfering in his job as captain, prompting PCB chairman Ijaz Butt to name Misbah-ul-Haq as the skipper for a two-match series against Ireland. Afridi subsequently pulled out of the squad for the Ireland series, which Pakistan won 2-0, saying that his father was ill.The turning point came when Afridi criticized the PCB officials, including one of the selectors Muhammad Ilyas, and then announced he was retiring from international cricket in protest. However, the enigmatic allrounder also said that if the present board setup was to change he might return.Afridi gained the support of a number of parliamentarians, while Geo Television reported on Saturday that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had telephoned Afridi in London.The PCB said later that it was concerned about outside interference in Afridi’s disciplinary case, given the reactions in Pakistan.“It is disappointing that despite Afridi has pleaded guilty to the offenses, some political functionaries are extending their support with a view to influencing the disciplinary process being followed by PCB,” Butt said in a statement.
Butt warned of an attempt “by some forces to prevent the board from implementing the code of conduct, and their act may well damage Pakistan cricket, if they continue to lend support to Afridi and exert undue pressure on PCB for their ‘non-cricketing’ interests.”Afridi was due to arrive in Karachi later Sunday and a large number of his supporters are expected to meet him at Quaid-e-Azam International Airport. In an official statement issued on Sunday evening, the cricket board states: “The PCB notes with great concern that an internal disciplinary action against Shahid Afridi is being converted into a political issue.
“A number of political functionaries are interfering in what is essentially an internal disciplinary matter of the PCB.The PCB and Afridi are at the loggerheads after the board had removed him from captaincy while announcing the one-day squad for the Ireland series.Afridi did not utter a word when he was removed from the captaincy but after Pakistan won the series against Ireland under the leadership of Misbah-ul-Haq, he blasted the PCB management and announced retirement from international cricket.

Pakistan cricket coach Waqar Younis said on Thursday he was “disappointed” by Shahid Afridi’s decision to retire from internationals and played down a reported rift with his former captain.Afridi quit international cricket on Monday, saying he was dejected after being replaced as one-day captain following a fiery clash with Waqar.Last month the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) replaced Afridi as captain with Misbah-ul-Haq, following his criticism of Waqar’s role in team selection during a recent tour of the West Indies.The PCB said it has summoned Waqar, who was due to travel to Australia to visit his ailing wife, to discuss the manager’s report on the West Indies tour, including details of the reported dispute with Afridi.Waqar added that appointing a new captain was not his prerogative.“It’s not in my hand to appoint captain of the team,” said a visibly upset Pakistan coach.“PCB chairman (Ijaz Butt) appoints captain so you better ask him why the change was made.”Meanwhile, Pakistan’s interior minister Rehman Malik has vowed to persuade the hugely popular Afridi to reconsider his decision.Malik played a key role in Zulqarnain Haider’s return to Pakistan in April this year, after the former wicket-keeper fled the team hotel in Dubai for London following death threats to fix a one-day match.Afridi said his decision to retire was final, as he would not play under the current PCB, headed by chairman Ijaz Butt, but hinted at a comeback if there was a change in leadership.The PCB suspended his central contract on Tuesday and revoked all no-objection certificates (NOCs) for the player, meaning Afridi will not be officially permitted to play overseas.Afridi, who still holds the record for the fastest one-day hundred, scored off 37-balls against Sri Lanka at Nairobi in 1997, led his side to the semi-finals of this year’s World Cup.
The burly all-rounder scored 6,695 in 325 one-dayers and took 315 wickets as a leg-spinner. He has a tally of 1,716 runs and 48 wickets in 27 Tests.
He also holds the record of hitting most sixes in all one-day cricket with 289.
